Why Cincinnati?

Why Cincinnati?

Why Cincinnati?

Cincinnati is the most surprising, cosmopolitan, photogenic city in the Midwest. Due to it’s rich history, it has a very European feel, with obvious German, Italian, Scots, Irish, and Jewish influences. The architecture is distinct. The River views are glorious. It’s “The City on Seven Hills,” a trait shared with Rome, it’s sister-city. The Cityscape is exciting and various.
It’s also where I was raised—so I know it like the back of my hand.

Cincinnati is a fantastic destination for photographers due to its diverse mix of historic architecture, vibrant urban scenes, natural beauty, and cultural energy.

Here’s why it’s exciting for photography:

Architectural Gems: Cincinnati is a treasure trove of historic architecture perfect for photography. The Roebling Suspension Bridge—an engineering marvel and forerunner to the Brooklyn Bridge—offers dramatic night scenes with its illuminated cables and bold lines. In the Over-the-Rhine district, 19th-century Italianate buildings feature colorful facades and ornate details, making it a vibrant setting for both street and architectural photography. The Art Deco landmarks of Carew Tower and Union Terminal, with their grand mosaic interiors, serve as iconic and visually stunning backdrops.

Urban Vibrancy: Neighborhoods like Over-the-Rhine and Findlay Market buzz with street life—think vendors, murals, and eclectic crowds—perfect for candid street photography. The area’s vibrant street art, including massive murals, adds bold colors and modern flair to your shots with its mix of gritty urban edges and revitalized charm.

Scenic Landscapes: The Ohio River and Smale Riverfront Park offer serene waterfront views, especially at sunset, with reflections of the skyline and bridges. Devou Park in nearby Covington provides panoramic shots of Cincinnati’s skyline, while Mount Adams’ hilly streets frame the city beautifully. Ault Park and Eden Park offer lush greenery and seasonal blooms for nature-focused photography.

Cultural Moments: The Cincinnati Zoo, with its photogenic animals like Fiona the hippo, is great for wildlife shots in a controlled setting. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center offers poignant indoor photography opportunities with its powerful exhibits.

Light and Seasons: Cincinnati’s four distinct seasons offer a constantly changing canvas for photographers—especially in autumn, when the fall foliage is at its peak. The interplay of natural and artificial light throughout the city creates dynamic visual opportunities. At dusk, areas like Fountain Square, the stadiums, bridges, and riverfront come alive with dramatic lighting that adds depth and atmosphere to urban scenes.

Hidden Spots: Lesser-known gems like the abandoned Cincinnati Subway tunnels (occasionally accessible for tours) or the quirky Mushroom House in Hyde Park offer unique, offbeat subjects. The city’s blend of old and new—think sleek skyscrapers juxtaposed with historic churches—creates compelling contrasts.

A Photographer’s Playground

Cincinnati’s skyline, bridges, and murals are frequent subjects in online photo shares, with photographers praising the city’s accessibility and visual diversity. Whether your passion lies in urban, nature, or architecture, Cincinnati offers a rich and varied backdrop—making it an inspiring and rewarding place to build your portfolio with striking, memorable images.

Workshop Overview

In this workshop, we’ll focus on developing your photographic vision and learning how to truly see. We’ll cover key topics such as composition, lens selection, point of view, and—most importantly—understanding the critical difference between a technically correct exposure and a creatively successful one.

You’ll gain practical insights into essential questions like:

  • Where should you, and how to best focus?

  • How do I meter, and where ought you take your meter reading?

  • Why is a tripod necessary?

  • When should you use high ISOs like 3200 or 6400?

  • How might you make tiny improvements to your photographic workflow?

  • When do you use a particular type of lens filter?

We’ll also dedicate three midday hours each day to image editing, ensuring you have the time and support to perfect your work in post-production.

This workshop is hands-on and personalized. From macro to telephoto, wide-angle to fisheye, natural light to flash—you’ll leave each session with stunning images and the confidence that your investment was truly worthwhile. I take your participation seriously and promise a meaningful, memorable, and lasting learning experience.

You’re not here to watch me disappear with my camera. My role is to be by your side, helping with composition, lens choice, point of view, and exposure decisions—so you can return home with exceptional photos you’re proud of.

Cancellation Policy

We understand that life happens, and sometimes plans must change. If you need to cancel within 30 days of the workshop, you have two options—depending on whether the workshop involves an outside tour operator—and whether you’ve purchased travel insurance, which we strongly recommend.

Option 1: No Outside Tour Operator

You may choose to receive:

  • A credit for all amounts paid, valid for any workshop within 12 months, or

  • A cancellation invoice and supporting documentation to submit a claim to your travel insurance provider for a refund.

Option 2: With Outside Tour Operator

  • You will receive detailed receipts for all workshop and tour operator payments, along with the necessary paperwork to submit a full refund claim through your travel insurance provider.

  • Unfortunately, no credits toward future workshops can be issued in this case.

  • Please note: While we are passionate about teaching photography, late cancellations are extremely difficult to accommodate. Filling a spot on short notice is rarely possible. We appreciate your understanding.

Travel Insurance
The following company provides travel insurance:  I am not endorsing a company and don’t have any affiliations or arrangements with them. The information is offered for your consideration if you are concerned about needing to cancel a workshop.

Waitlist

Important: Meet and Greet

October 17th, the evening before the workshop, we will meet at Hampton Inn & Suites for approximately an hour.
Cincinnati-Downtown, 617 Vine St Suite A, Cincinnati, OH 45202
https://www.hilton.com/en/book/reservation/rates/

This time is an opportunity to meet each other, share a little bit about ourselves and get acquainted. We will discuss equipment and any concerns you might have along with your goals and expectations for the workshop. Most importantly, we will cover the proposed agenda for the two workshop days based on current weather and local events.

Cincinnati is an exciting place to stay and continue your adventure beyond our two days together. I will suggest other local destinations and experiences to continue your photographic journey for many days, if you wish.

I look forward to working with you, re-connecting with old friends and making new ones!
